Investment in nature recovery may come from several sources including grants and schemes (public and third sectors), investment (private sector), entrepreneurial approaches (e.g. sale of products or experiences),  or sale of units or credits on an ecosystem service market. There are several existing and latent markets developing around various Ecosystem Services in the UK, most of these are currently voluntary with the exception of BNG (mandatory from early 2024 in England). BNG therefore poses a significant opportunity to generate investment in nature recovery both locally and nationally. There are often rules surrounding stacking and bundling of different types of credits/units, in order to avoid 'double-counting', there may also be rules and caveats attached to other funding sources (e.g. grant terms).
